Webinar: Trends in Adult Learning: Insights from a Community Learning Leader
24 April 2026
There is a growing trend of learners and professionals coming together informally to learn from each other. These "peer-learning" and “ad-hoc” meets are often created by younger, more independent learners. Two aspects where they excel are: 1) they provide a zero-cost, "dip-your-toes-in" space for those exploring a new industry or topic, and 2) they offer a lasting ecosystem where members can continuously upskill, network, and experience the professional satisfaction of mentoring others.

Join us for a discussion with Michael Cheng, an Engineering Manager at GovTech and a cornerstone of Singapore's community learning scene. As the founder of initiatives like JuniorDevSG and Engineers.SG (opens in new tab), Michael has spent years building the very spaces where peer-to-peer learning thrives.
In this webinar, the following will be discussed:
• The "Shadow" learning spaces: Identifying the latest learning trends emerging outside of formal institutions.
• The architecture of belonging: How to build and sustain open learning communities that people want to join.
• Tapping into the community: Practical ways that we formal educators and our students can participate in these communities or even create our own.
• The community tech stack: A look at the platforms and tools that power decentralised, community-based learning.
Facilitator:
Michael Cheng (Founder of Singapore PHP User Group, co-founder of iOS Dev Scouts and is the organiser of PHPConf.Asia (opens in new tab). He also runs Engineers.SG (opens in new tab), a not-for-profit community initiative to document and archive the tech and startup scene in Singapore)
